Bridging the past

Dear All,
This began as a short letter to be sent just before we headed off to England and Minnesota, but we ended up taking an early camping trip up the Sunshine Coast, so it’s now become a trip letter.

When I started this letter my back was damaged yet again. This time my only comfortable position was sitting in an upright chair. What to do?  Television - fell out of chair within minutes.  Reading - fell out eventually, clutching book. Obviously I needed to be active, so I started scanning our remaining ancient photos, with the scanner on my left and a laptop on my right. Kept my back straight and just swivelled to and fro a few thousand times.  Good news: I stayed awake.  Bad news: calluses and blisters. I had to add a large pillow to the chair: now I could fall out of the chair while still awake.  Luckily my back recovered before I had to add a seat belt to the arrangement.

The good result of all that was that most of our 1970s and 1980s photos are now on the computer.  Some of them are also on the web site.  We have a number of trip journals that were written long before the advent of digital photos, so I experimented with adding pictures to one of them.  I chose Auntie Eileen and Uncle Noel’s trip from England to see us back in 1980.  We took them out to British Columbia via the Badlands and Yellowstone and came back via the Canadian Rockies and Glacier and then spent a few days on Superior’s North Shore.  If you’re interested, take a look at the 1980s tab and the 1980/06 letter.  Or go directly to http://hancockstravels.com/198006EileenNoel/letterindex.htm  You’ll need the usual userid/password.

Since then I’ve built something similar for the 1989/05 trip I made to Tokyo and the 1989/06 trip we all made to Newfoundland, our longest with the whole family, both in time and distance.
