Thursday March 4 
After much-needed showers, we headed south on empty roads and across more dried-up lakes and through tiny places like Balranald. We crossed the Murray River at Tooleybuc into Victoria and the landscape became progressively greener and more populated.
A great many farms seem to be converting themselves into vineyards. Too many, I think. Unless the entire population of Australia is intending to be blotto on wine instead of beer there are too many grapes being grown. We were heading down the Murray Valley highway towards Shepparton and Carolyn and Jason’s house.

They’ve done a great job on the house, both inside and outside. We’d planned on camping in their front yard just like we did two years ago, but it had just been seeded, so we accepted a bed inside. They looked after us very well.
Jason was busy cooking on the barbecue, but had time to squash a redback spider before one of us encountered it. He and Carolyn both work for the local water authority but he’s been reassigned to a public relations job at Eildon, where the authority is upgrading the reservoir and dam system. So he’s going to be working there for a while and coming home at weekends.
