Dear All,
Hope has been noisy since the ice storm with chainsaws and wood chippers cleaning up the mess.  We had a windstorm a week later, which brought down most of the branches that had been left hanging in the trees.  Our fence had escaped so far, but was smashed by this storm, which also hit the railings and siding again.  I’ve since rebuilt the fence but we have contractors coming to fix the railings and to trim our big Douglas fir.

We had some good news though.  A year ago, our English bank used the wrong exchange rate for one of our cheques.  After a number of complaints, they finally called us, at 4 am our time of course, and said that as I kept better records than they did, they’d take my word for the amount involved and refund me an additional £30 for my trouble.

The fuss about aliens getting money out of USA investments seems to have quietened down too, now that the rules are understood.  Now all it takes to transfer money out of a US investment is a phone call, rather than the mailing of witnessed documents.  With a bit of luck we can also resolve our disagreement with the Canada Revenue Agency – their last note said we should have our paperwork ready as they would be calling us sometime in the next six months.  I’ve been sitting by the phone with my pencil ready ever since.
