On the radio we were hearing lots of criticisms about FEMA’s response to the Katrina disaster.  It sounded a bit like my company after a reorganization.  With large companies you can never reorganize correctly.  There are always tasks that fall through the cracks and are discovered weeks later.  The problem with an organization like FEMA is that you don’t find the missing tasks until you’re in the middle of an emergency.

We were following Highway 2 to Grand Forks, itself the scene of a disaster back in the 1990s when it was first flooded by the Red River and then burned down to water level when the gas mains ruptured.  On crossing from Fargo into Minnesota, we were relieved to find that gas prices there were around $2.79, closer to what we expected.  From there we flew down I-94 to Alexandria with a following gale.
