2005/08 Alaska Trip - The Island and home - Revelstoke |

So we said our goodbyes and headed off towards Alberta. For a change, we took the Coquihalla Highway up and over the mountains to Kamloops. The Coquihalla was built as a faster alternative to the road through the Fraser Canyon. It’s more direct, but it climbs to nearly 5000 feet, so it’s not unusual to get snow up there in July or August, as we’ve found out on previous trips, but on this day it was warm and sunny. At Kamloops we joined the Transcanada Highway and headed east towards Lake Louise. We got as far as Revelstoke and stopped at the Lamplighter campground on the Columbia River, one we’ve used a few times before. We took a walk along the dyke that evening hoping to get a good view of the river, but the water was way off in the distance.

It was a pretty day and awfully tempting to stop off at one of the national parks on this road, but we had other plans so we kept on going. We drove across Rogers Pass to Golden and then through Yoho to Kicking Horse Pass, past Lake Louise to Banff, and down the hill towards Calgary.
