Sunday August 28th
This was our last full day in Port Alberni, and it was surprisingly sunny after the dismal forecast.  We were going to explore the other side of the Alberni Inlet, the channel that connects the town to the Pacific Ocean.  We’d driven down to Bamfield on the town side of the inlet last year, and taken the ferry down to the Broken Islands, but we’d never been to the other side.

FAMILY VERSION

There are no normal roads there but there are plenty of logging roads.  Some of these are “mains” which carry most of the logging traffic and are usually well maintained.  The others are often very steep and may or may not be cared for.  We followed one of these up high on the mountain to the microwave reflector tower for a great view across the inlet to town.  Our poor old truck was still working hard and bouncing along.

For lunch we drove further along the Macktush Main to a campground down on the inlet, across the water from where we’d seen all the humming birds last year.  It looked like most of the campers had been there all summer, using their trailers as weekend cottages, not a bad deal as they can launch their boats from there too.

As the truck had made it this far OK we went back the long way, taking a loop around the Nahmint Main, and along Nahmint Lake.  The road went past piles of tree debris and it was just as well that we were driving this road on a Sunday or else we would have been in the middle of a helicopter logging operation.  The road took us back along the Stirling Arm of Sproat Lake and past the site of the new house, so we stopped for a look.  The ground had been flattened out to take the pump and power house, so there had been some progress, but as expected the trench for the power line had not yet been dug.
