2005/08 Alaska Trip - The Island and home - Sproat Lake |
|||||
Friday August 19th
Karen took us hiking on the trails close to where they used to live. These took us above the Log Train trail, to a pretty waterfall, and ended up at a spot for dining on blackberries.
Stewart took us out to Sproat Lake to visit the petroglyphs. They are carved in the rocks facing the lake, so the viewing platform floats in the lake, not a good spot for either cameras or Evan when there are too many people on the platform! Sproat Lake is the home of the Mars waterbombers, used for putting out fires in BC and most of Canada. One of the bombers was practicing on nearby hillsides, dropping great deluges of water on the forests – not a good place to be hiking!

We all took a walk down to the harbour for the Farmers Market, and to give Evan the opportunity to use the playground there. Then we drove to the building site and took a short hike up one of the nearby hills, probably destined to be somebody’s future home site. On the way back we took a detour into the rear two acres of their land, and found out how hard it is to make progress through the forest without a trail. Even the dogs were having trouble making their way through the maze of rocks, ferns, salal, and fallen tree trunks.
