We stopped to brew tea at Painted Chasm park. The chasm is a great canyon that was created by a river carrying meltwater from the glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. Today it’s an insignificant stream but the canyon is still there, waiting for the next Ice Age. The next stop was in Cache Creek for the ladies to visit the jade store but the driver chose to sleep through this shopping opportunity.

Cariboo Highway (100 Mile House, Chasm, Thompson Canyon) |
---|
The Thompson Canyon is always scenic, but this time it was exciting with lots of fire activity. We saw helicopters fighting a hilltop fire, and then watched a fire developing down at river level, presumably started by embers carried on the wind. We stopped in the Fraser Canyon at Hell’s Gate and noted that the cost of a few minute’s ride down and up on the tram had hit $14 now. We usually walk it but that takes well over an hour. It closed as we arrived
so that ended the discussion of ride vs. walk.
