Sunday May 27th ![]()
It was a cold night and the camper’s gas had run out again, but we had a clear blue sky in the morning. We were glad that John and Edna could at last walk into town, do some shopping, and look around in comfort. The buildings look ramshackle from the main street but it was only when walking the back streets that we could see what was holding them up. Some of the parking areas weren’t much better. But the town is a lot of fun with quirky shops and saloons, fire engines, a railroad and a couple of photogenic churches\

While the rest were window shopping I found a nice chunk of railroad tie to support the trailer’s tongue. Our repeated graunching had
reshaped the hitch jack so that we could no longer put the wheel on. But now we didn’t need to fix it until we got back to our garage.
The plan was to drive down to Mono Lake that afternoon, and camp nearby so that we could cross into Yosemite on the Monday, the end of the long Memorial Day weekend and hopefully an easier day to find a campsite.

On our way out of town we spotted the railroad train making its way through the tunnels and we stopped for morning coffee. I was leaning forward to pick up our water barrel when I felt my back go bad. It was not as bad as the injuries of
last year but it still rendered me pretty useless for everything. I needed a trekking pole (and a lot of time) to get in and out of the truck, and Sandie was stuck with all the driving.
