2006/03 Southwest USA trip (AZ-MN) - Black Creek |

We’d been resigned to having to make a 1000 mile dash from the south to Minnesota to avoid camping in some very cold places, but from the forecast it sounded like we’d have a few days of heatwave, so we planned a 4-5 day schedule, stopping in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. The last lap across Iowa and southern Minnesota we could easily do in one day if need be.
We began with a 300-mile drive from central Texas to the northern border with Oklahoma. It was an easy 
drive on a warm and windy day along quiet roads through small towns to Decateur. We easily found the Lyndon B. Johnson national grassland and Black Creek Lake. We had hoped for a 
free campsite but the price had gone up to $2! We had to fork out half price, $1.
The lake is a reservoir and was well down because of the drought, and Black Creek was mostly dry, but it was a nice spot on a sunny evening. We had a dozen or more black vultures soaring over us on the strong wind. We also saw a vee of geese heading north, maybe towards Minnesota. The sunset was gorgeous, and we had it to ourselves, with nobody else camping.
