2019/04 Panama trip - Night tour 2 |

Sandie and I were going out on a night tour, but it began before we even left the Tower, as Sandie met this woolly possum on the
staircase. It scooted past her up the stairs to the dining area pursued by her and Igua, and then it disappeared somewhere in the kitchen.

Driving down the hill we found the usual sloths and then a pair of pacas, another kind of large rodent.

Then we saw a large snake partway across the road. Something chose this moment to sting me on the end of my nose and
suddenly my eyes were streaming and I couldn’t see. Sandie didn’t get a picture either as I was in her way but heroic Igua took her video camera and followed the snake into the undergrowth, getting pictures of various bits of its head and body. He asked if he should bring the snake back but she said no! It was bigger than him, a boa constrictor, capable of a nasty bite.

Shortly afterwards we found a nine-banded armadillo, similar to those we’d seen in Texas. Even in daylight they are hard to see with their bodies buried in the leaf litter, chasing ants, so I was surprised to find Sandie had caught this frame on the video. The head and ears are on the right.
