We headed for Amherst and visited another quilt shop.  Then we were off across lowlands towards New Brunswick.  Nova Scotia is connected by just 15 miles of lowlands, so it is close to being an island.  The area is also home to a large wind farm and we were battling strong wind gusts as we drove to Moncton.  After a couple more quilting stops we drove down the New Brunswick shore of the Bay of Fundy.  New Brunswick is a bilingual province with the French speakers mainly at the other end, next to Quebec, but unlike Quebec it’s rarely in the news.

We thought we’d take a coffee break at Hopewell Rocks, also called the Flowerpots, a bunch of large seastacks we’ve visited in the past.  They’d been in the news a few months back when Elephant Rock partly collapsed.  However, we found that the area is now a provincial park and fenced off with entrance fees, OK perhaps for a day out, but not for a few minutes.  It looked like a government money grab and it seemed to be successful; its gigantic parking lot held hundreds of cars, another reason for us not to visit.

We ended the day at Fundy national park and arrived just as the wind became wind and fog and rain, so we grabbed a campsite at Wolfe Point and cooked dinner, hoping to see more of the park in the morning.  On our way we crossed this covered bridge, rare to be able to drive a truck over one of these antiques.

Friday August 26th
The foul weather was still with us in the morning.  Despite this we walked down to the beach.  Not surprisingly we had the place to ourselves, but couldn’t see much through the murk and we soon set off west towards the USA border.  This was mostly forest with few towns and we bypassed St John, the only city.  We hoped to make it into Maine before we had to fill up with diesel.
