2015/11 Australia trip - Mount Compass |
|||||
Saturday November 14th
This was a travellingday. We were going south to Cape Jervis to pick up the ferry to Kangaroo Island. The plan was do some shopping in Port Augusta and then camp somewhere south of Adelaide close to the ferry terminal.
That morning the light was just beautiful, illuminating the river gums around our campsite. We also had a visitor, this ringneck parrot.
On our way out we saw mob after mob of emus. We’ve seen emus all over the Australian mainland but never as many as here.

Port Augusta was very quiet on a Saturday morning and we scurried around and quickly filled up with diesel and water, and signed up for Internet access at the library. Then we were off south towards Adelaide. We were now back in wheat country. We stopped for lunch at Bumbunga Lake, a pink lake that really was pink this time.
The motorway into Adelaide looked promising but dissolved into a slow drag through city streets and dozens of traffic lights. Eventually suburbia gave way to countryside and steep hills, and we were into wine country with brand names we recognized.
We reached our overnight stop at Mount Compass. It’s just a parking lot with a very nice toilet block but camping is free, presumably in the hope that campers will wander around town and spend money. We might have done that but the rain was lashing down that night.
Sunday November 15th
The morning was dry but still windy, not good for Sandie’s ferry trip.
From our site we had a view of the Adelaide Hills and wetlands and there were a few large sculptures, including one with this rather unusual ripple effect.
