FAMILY VERSION

It was the nicest day since we’d arrived: sunny with a light breeze.  We were going into Stanley again for more shopping and sightseeing.  There was no cruise ship this time, but there were a number of squid boats in the harbour, in town to renew their fishing licenses.

Stanley second visit

I went for a walk along the waterfront, snapping pictures of the buildings and monuments, particularly the whalebone arch by the cathedral.  The ladies went shopping and were going to collect me for lunch, but I’d walked a bit further than they’d expected, ending up at the cemetery with this view over the harbour and squid boats, and they had to send help to come and collect me.

We ate at Malvina House, named after a previous owner’s daughter, but it’s a controversial name as the Argentinian title for the Falklands is the Islas Malvinas.  Sandie enjoyed their famous upland goose pate and accompanying diddle-dee syrup.  In the interests of scientific research, I tried the local brew, but didn’t ask for a second.

We went back to Gypsy Cove and had great weather on the beach, warm enough to take off a layer.  The Falklands does have summer after all.  The king penguin had gone but the Magellanics were out in force and in a huddle at the water’s edge.

It was nice to see the sun, but it was squarely in F ’s eyes all the way back to Darwin.  Then we had to pack.
