2005/07 Alaska and Back Again - Muncho Lake park |
|||||
Fifty miles on we came to Muncho Lake park. Last year, we had some glimpses of the beauty of this park, but it all disappeared into some miserable weather, so we were looking forward to seeing more of it this time. We needed to find a campsite, and to our surprise, were lucky enough to find the perfect site on the beach backing onto the lake. The lake has this strange deep blue colour, which apparently comes from copper minerals in the water.

After setting up we went out to explore the western end of the park. The scenery is gorgeous, with great Rocky Mountains, and rushing blue streams. These are the northernmost mountains of the Rocky Mountain range that stretches from New Mexico to northern BC. A unique feature of Muncho is its alluvial fans, great stretches of gravel that carry the spring runoff from the mountains into the lake.
Muncho also has some soft rock and hoodoos that are carved by the winds and rain. The animals come to the hoodoos for a salt lick but we didn’t see either sheep or caribou. We had plenty of rain however, small storms that swept through, dumped on us, and disappeared.
We had hopes of a barbeque but the rain was too heavy when we got back, so we cooked inside. Our neighbours, however, were happy to party in the rain until the early hours. John and Edna suffered from this but Sandie and I zonked out and missed it all.
