Thursday July 28th
On Thursday morning we were on our way back along the Kenai River and then south to Seward, on Alaska’s south coast, to see if the weather was good enough and calm enough for another boat trip.  Seward was sunny and smelled of fish and the sea, very much a fishing port, and with many operators to take you fishing or out to see the wildlife.

Kenai Peninsula (Seward and Kenai Fjord)

We were going with the Kenai Fjords company, who run tours to see the nearby glaciers and to visit the seal and bird colonies.  We’d seen enough glaciers the previous day so we opted for the wildlife cruise, in a much smaller boat.   This ran down the fjord, which was quite calm, and out to the open sea which had a big swell, and Sandie and Edna did not enjoy that bit.  The mountains around the fjord were really lush and scenic, and looked like something out of South Pacific, if you ignored the glaciers!

The captain took us out to the cliffs and rocks facing the ocean, and that’s where we saw the kittiwakes, puffins, sealions, sea otters, and eagles.  The puffins were the stars though, really entertaining fliers.  It was really hard to see things though with the boat pitching with the swell and spinning around to give everyone a view.  Sandie was not happy with the captain.

After the trip we drove to the end of the road, a pretty waterfall, and Caines Head state park.  We took a hike along the state trail, high above the coast, but we were running out of light and had to leave the rest of it for another day, and another year.  We were, as usual, late back to the campsite.
