2005/04 Deep South trip - Devil's Den |
|||
The mine closed at four, so we had time to drive north across Arkansas, though Y City and Fort Smith to the Boston Mountains and Devils Den state park. We arrived just before dark and camped alongside Lee Creek.
Friday April 15th
There are two major hikes in the park and we ended up doing both of them. It was another gorgeous day in the mid-seventies, and the forest was at its spring best, with wildflowers all over. The park has interesting geology: a plateau of sandstone underlaid by shale, and there are lots of caves, weirdly eroded rocks, and waterfalls.
We hiked up to Yellow Rock and then did the Devil’s Den hike. The “den” is a cave that goes back and down into the mountain about 500 feet. I went partway into the cave but as neither the flashlight nor the camera flash was working properly, I decided to leave the last 450 feet for another day!
