We were headed for Edisto Beach park, about a hundred miles into South Carolina, but found that the access road was closed by repairs to the railroad crossing.  By the time we had tacked our way around the closed roads, it was almost dark, and we were glad to find a good campsite.  The temperature had dived over twenty degrees and we had some light rainshowers.

Tuesday March 22nd
We took a walk along the beach in late morning.  The wind was blowing hard and the sky looked threatening, but it was reasonably warm.  Sandie was collecting conches and I was watching a parade of pelicans diving for fish just beyond the surf.  The beach is all sand and shells with a few palm trees around the beach campground.  We were about a half mile inshore at the other campground, in the oak and palmetto forest.  The two campgrounds are separated by salt marsh and connected by a causeway.

We had intended taking a walk in the forest that afternoon, but the thunder was booming and the rain was thrashing down, so I took the opportunity to finish off part one of this letter. The next day we were going to drive north to Columbia, South Carolina, and on the Thursday we’d leave the camper at the builders, Provan Industries, and fly up to Hamilton, Ontario as surprise guests at Ron and Junie’s golden wedding.

We were invited after we’d already planned this trip.  We’d briefly thought about driving there, but it’s an 1800 mile round trip from Columbia and there would always be the chance of a blizzard en route.  So we had cashed in the frequent flyer miles, ideal for an otherwise expensive multi-leg flight.  We would just have to remember to put some more clothes on for Ontario’s version of Spring.

All the best from Pete and Sandie
