2016/08 Newf'land trip - St Louis Park |

It was surprisingly cool, but still humid as we set off early. We wanted to get to Minneapolis before the evening rush hour. We were back to having little sketched maps for the quilt shops. We would have been too early for the first quilt shop in Cedar Rapids but luckily she’d opened early for a class. We got a little lost on our way to the shop in Cedar Falls but these prairie towns with roads at right angles are a lot easier to manage.
When we joined I-35 we felt close to our old home. Our last stop in Iowa was at Clear Lake, home to one of my company’s plants back in the 80s and 90s. I came here a few times. It’s also famous for hosting Buddy Holly’s last concert the evening before the Day the Music Died.
As we crossed into Minnesota the GPS went from grey to streets; we were out of the Twilight Zone for good. We made one more quilting stop in Northfield, also famous but for different reasons. The James-Younger gang tried to rob the bank there but failed, and the only gang members to escape were Jesse and Frank James, and they were both wounded. Northfield’s quilt shop was hidden inside an unmarked building but Sandie sniffed it out.

We were staying with our son in St Louis Park.
After traveling for days we were reluctant to go out to eat, so it was a pizza evening. We slept in the camper and the weather cooled off nicely, good sleeping weather.
Friday September 2nd
We woke up to engine noise, dinging bells, and a train whistle. The neighbouring railroad line, which usually has about one train a day, was running a Midnight Special. It even woke our son up.
Most of the family was working so the ladies were off visiting quilt and fabric shops.
We battled our way right across the Twin Cities to St Louis Park. This time we were ready for dinner out at Granite City.
