We had a warm and humid morning, and the sky to the north of us looked dark and wet, dumping on Sudbury we thought. On our route south we had sunshine. The two-lane highway transitioned to the four lanes of Route 400, hacked through solid rock. Our previous experience was of flying into Toronto on the 400 and then crawling our way to Hamilton, so we took off on country roads to bypass the city.
This turned out to be a good decision. The country route probably wasn’t any faster overall, but we enjoyed the farming countryside, the narrow town streets, and stone buildings. It had an English flavour to it, except the roads were much too straight for England. I missed a lot of turns; many weren’t signed until it was far too late to get into the correct lane, but we enjoyed the scenery, particularly in the Grand Valley area.
