2004/02 Prom and the Wedding - Oberon Bay |

Monday February 9th![]()
Running on the beach felt good the next morning, even when a wrong turn sent me miles along a hiking trail and extended my run by an hour. We took a hike over the headland down to Little Oberon Bay and then over the next headland to Oberon Bay. These are gorgeous spots, with polished granite rocks and white sand. It was very hot, and we had the beaches to ourselves.

Except for the birds and the flies! We’d been warned about the “March flies”. On our previous trips we’d been earlier in the year and hadn’t experienced these. Well, there seemed to be about three varieties, a large black fly, a more colourful art-deco fly, and a very large black horsefly. ![]()
However, they all bite, and they attack as a gang, taking chunks of flesh, even
through a tee shirt. They mainly go for the calves and ankles, so after a while you walk hunched over and swatting at your lower legs. We even tried bushwhacking our way around the beaches on our way back to avoid the deep sand where they were at their worst,
but the going got too difficult so we had to run the gauntlet. The birds were easier to get along with, the usual mob of gulls and terns and oyster catchers.
