Saturday February 7th
On the Saturday, we headed to the Walhalla area, where we wandered around the Thomson River, and visited the old cemetery. This used to be a large town back in the gold mining days, but now it is just a small village.
John and I were standing by an old bridge when a passing car honked at us and the driver pointed down at the ground. Right behind us was a large snake. John thought it was an eastern brown snake, one of the most poisonous in Australia. It probably came up through the bridge boards as we walked over, but luckily it was more interested in getting down to the ground and across the stream.

We hiked up to the local cricket field. The miners built this on their days off, Sundays, cutting off the top of the mountain so they had a flat surface for their games of cricket. Apparently the home team would sleep up there before a game and get an advantage over the visiting team who’d have to hike up the hill carrying all their gear.
We saw this gang gang cockatoo on our way down. On the drive back we stopped off for dinner at this great restaurant at Coopers Creek tucked away at a campground at the end of a track. A good day. Thanks to John for doing all the driving.
