We had a long but pleasant drive through the Bitterroot Mountains, up the Clark Fork of the Missouri, through the old mining towns of Idaho to the big lake at Coeur d’Alene and north to the Purcell Mountains and across the border into British Columbia.  We stopped for the night at the closest campground to the border, a forest service site in Goat River Canyon.  Partway in, one of our wheels started screeching.  My best guess was that we had a rock stuck between the disk and the dust cover, but stopping in the middle of a logging main road and jacking up the wheel to get at it wasn’t a safe option, so we screeched a couple of miles to the lane leading to the campground, where the rock fell out anyway.

We camped on a gravel bench above the Goat River, under the trees, and surrounded by dozens of trilliums.  We had the place to ourselves except for a mule deer that passed through, stopping by our fire to check us out.  We had a nice big fire grate and plenty of dead wood, so we were able to cook outside.
