Sunday August 14th
Sunday was hot and sunny again so we headed for the beach, this time on Chilliwack Lake.  Sandie stayed home to do the washing.  Bob took us in his new Santa Fe, so we had a welcome break from driving.  The lake is one of those classic BC lakes, about ten miles long, going back almost to the US border.  Most of it is icy cold but the beach is shallow and protected from the wind and it warms up nicely.  Evan and the dogs enjoyed splashing around.  Stewart was teaching Gracie to swim.  She loves to paddle in shallow water but gets scared in the deep.  We were all getting sunburned after our weeks in the rain.

FAMILY VERSION

Karen and Stewart had to leave in mid-afternoon to catch the ferry and go home.  Bob took the rest of us down to Heron Rookery just off the Chilliwack River.  The area had once been army land, used for practicing beach landings, but it is now a pretty nature reserve.  We only saw one heron as they were all out to lunch, but we saw many ducks and turtles.  It was also John and Edna’s introduction to BC’s blackberries.  With the wet spring and sunny August these couldn’t have been better, really large and sweet.  We considered carrying some back, but that might be frowned upon in a nature reserve, so we just stood, picked, and ate.

Bob and Pat fed us that night, which was just as well, as we were all busy packing.  John and Edna were packing for their flight to Australia.  Sandie and I were packing for a two-week trip to the Island without the trailer.  We were going to be staying with Karen and Stewart, and leaving the trailer behind.
