2005/06 Alaska Trip - Road West - Nahatlatch |
|||||
Monday July 4th
We loaded up the Suburban with the seven of us and headed for a trip up the Nahatlatch River. On the way there we stopped off at the lot in Hope, and verified that Bob and Brian have been doing a great job of keeping the lawn under control. Our neighbours, the Andriesons, were a bit upset that the lot on their other side is being developed with trees being removed and a new log house going in.

We had a picnic on the beach on the Fraser River and then headed up the Fraser Canyon to North Bend, where the logging roads lead to the Nahatlatch and Reo Rafting’s Lodge. This was where we rafted two years ago, and it was great to be able to see the river from above and take a look at the rapids and waterfalls that we were too busy to look at back then.
Further upriver the Nahatlatch is a sequence of beautiful, freezing cold lakes, with some chilly swimming spots, pretty waterfalls, and some secluded camp sites, so we’ll probably come back here again when we move to Hope. On the way back we drove down to the “take out”, where the canyon rafting trips end. This reminded us that the toughest part of the trip was carrying the raft up from the river to the trailer.
Some of the ladies were not too enthusiastic about driving this track, but I pointed out that Reo does it with an old school bus! At the bottom we had a good view of the last waterfall we’d dropped over, and we had a glimpse of the “nozzle”, a waterfall that jets out between a rock and the canyon wall. This is where we’d flipped the raft and all went swimming for a while.
We had dinner at Rollie’s in Hope and stopped off in Agassiz for a while to see how Sandie’s home town has changed. We took a look at her Mum and Dad’s house. This isn’t
always a good thing to do, but we all agreed that the new owners had improved the look of the house, and they’d also filled the front yard with flowers and children’s toys.
