We spent most of the evening swapping horror stories about politicians, health services, and education. This was, after all, election night in Canada and all Canadians were riveted to their TV sets as they watched the results come in. Mainly, it seemed to be a process for choosing the candidates who were the least scary or least likely to actually do anything and cause any damage. Everyone seemed happy with the result, which was a diminished number of Liberal MPs, enough to form a minority government over the Tories and the NDP, but not enough to actually do any harm without some alliance with the NDP. Even the Tories were jubilant. They seemed to think there was a good chance that there’d have to be another election soon. Perhaps having elections is more fun than actually trying to run the country?
Tuesday 29th June
We left early on the Tuesday morning, heading for the ferry terminal at Tsawwassen, just south of Vancouver. Despite being close to the Canada Day holiday, there was plenty of room, and we were soon onto a ferry to Swartz Bay, near Victoria.
